SUPREME COURT JUSTICE RITA GARMAN ANNOUNCES TWO VACANCIES IN SEVENTH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT

One vacancy will be created by the retirement of AT-Large Circuit Judge Leslie Graves on December 2, 2018. A second vacancy is expected for the position of Resident Circuit Judge. The incumbent, Justice Peter Cavanagh, was assigned to the Appellate Court on March 1, 2018.

Under the Illinois Constitution, judicial vacancies are filled by Supreme Court appointment. The application process will lead to the final Court approval. Applicants will undergo an evaluation and screening process.

Notice of the vacancy has been posted in the courthouses throughout the Circuit. The application form and instructions may be obtained by visiting the Illinois Supreme Court's website at www.illinoiscourts.gov following the instructions in the Lastest News scroller announcing the Seventh Judicial Circuit vacancy.

Deadline for submission of an application is Friday, October 19, 2018.

The persons appointed to fill the vacancies will serve until the first Monday in December following the November 2020 general election.

To be eligible for consideration for appointment, the applicant must be a lawyer licensed to practice law in Illinois.

The Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court is responsible for maintaining a record of all traffic, civil, and criminal cases filed and heard in Jersey County. On a daily basis, the office interacts with the public and attorneys performing several functions including the collection and disbursement of traffic fines, civil fees, and child support. The office is also responsible for recording filed documents and maintaining a record of all court proceedings.

The Office of the Circuit Clerk is a state constitutional officer elected by the citizens of Jersey County for a four year term. The Circuit Clerk is a non-judicial office of the Judicial Branch of Illinois State government.

The Clerk of the Circuit Court files all cases and maintains official records of all cases that come before the Jersey County court system. The Circuit Clerk's Office also receives and holds in trust monies to be disbursed on order of the court.
